Catalase 1.0

At first glance, low catalase and/or high hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) levels can be tied to the start or existence of graying hair. Gray hair appears in our early 40's and can be extensive in the 50's, 60's and beyond.

What can high levels H2O2 molecules do? Excess circulating H2O2 is toxic to cells and produce peroxide free radicals (ROS molecules). H2O2 molecules reduce or block the production of melanin in hair follicles. Lack of melanin production results in growth of gray hair.

Sources of H2O2 molecules; the natural function of S.O.D. enzyme generates H2O2, as do S.O.D. supplements. Commonly consumed foods and drink and routinely used OTC pain drugs and several prescription medicines increase H2O2 levels as well. Increased H2O2 combined with low or dropping catalase levels can result in an in-balance of the natural H2O2-Catalase cycle resulting in high H2O2 levels. Indications and risks of elevated hydrogen peroxide and/or low catalase levels: The degree of, or presence of gray hair may be a good indicator of low catalase and/or high H2O2 levels. Long-term exposure (year over year) to higher-than-normal H2O2 and its resulting ROS molecules can damage hair follicle DNA and cell functions to the point that the damage is permanent. Permanently damaged hair follicles can only grow gray hair and may also result in hair loss (nonfunctioning or dead follicles). Supporting catalase levels can support increased melanin production and thus growth of natural hair color. No one knows for sure how damaged follicles are and if they will be able produce melanin again.
